📚 Community Programs – Building Skills, One Pedal Stroke at a Time

Updated: May 13

At LABA, we believe that cycling is more than a sport; it’s a pathway to confidence, health, and opportunity. This season, we’re excited to lead two major Bike & Safety Education Programs in collaboration with local schools and nonprofit partners across Los Angeles.

🚸 Audubon Middle School – 8-Week Riding & Safety Program

Starting May 2025

As part of the school’s physical education curriculum, our 8-week program at Audubon Middle School focuses on riding skills and on-bike confidence. Working with large groups during school hours, we prioritize movement, fun, and hands-on learning.

While students do receive instruction in basic safety checks and bike vocabulary, the heart of the program is spent riding, building balance, coordination, and safe riding habits through drills and group rides.

Students gain experience in:

  • Safe riding and traffic awareness

  • Helmet fitting and ABC quick checks

  • Balance and starting/stopping drills

  • Group riding and communication skills

  • Turning techniques, handling skills

  • Basic gymkhana-style exercises

💡 By the end of the program, students ride confidently, understand the importance of bike safety, and show significant improvement in their riding skills, regardless of their starting level.

🛠️ Heart of LA – 6-Week Bike Safety & Mechanics Curriculum

April 22 – May 31, 2025

Offered as an after-school program in the Pico-Union and Westlake communities, our partnership with Heart of LA delivers a more in-depth, hands-on cycling education experience. Each week is split between bike mechanics and riding, ensuring students learn how to care for their bikes as well as how to ride them safely.

Key learning areas include:

  • Helmet fitting and ABC quick checks

  • Rules of the road and responsible cycling

  • Visibility and communication

  • Flat repair, drivetrain maintenance, and shifting

  • Brake systems

  • Group riding drills and obstacle handling

  • Journaling and reflection for long-term learning

🎯 Our goal is to empower students with both the skills to ride safely and the mechanical knowledge to care for their bikes independently.
